Women's Summer Vest

MATERIALS:
Yarn: 4 ply worsted weight yarn.
I'm not sure how much I used as I had used balls of this yarn that I had rolled up and was left over from another project. I would purchase at least two 170 g balls just to be sure.

Hook: 5 mm

Gauge:
3 blocks = 2 inches
3 rows of blocks = 2 inches

Size:
I'm not sure what size you would call it. I usually buy tops in women's small size. Bust is 38 inches, around the rib cage where you put the tie is 33 inches. The vest is approximately 25 inches from neck to bottom on the back.

To increase or decrease the size, go by your gauge. To add another block, add 3 more chains to your starting chain. To reduce by a block, subtract 3 chains on your starting chain. Place any extra blocks evenly over the fronts and back. For example, if you add 3 more blocks, place one on each front and one on the back. The decreases for the gathered front can remain the same as this pattern.

Abbreviations used:
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
tog - together

How to make 2 dc tog - put yarn over hook and insert in next dc, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, skip 2 chs, insert hook in next dc, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, and pull through 3 loops on hook.

Rows 3 to 22 - Repeat Row 2 for Pattern

Row 23 - This is the decreasing Row where you make the gathering or pleats at the front. 2 dc tog, * ch 2, 2 dc tog,* repeat from * to * 7 more times for a total of 9 decreases, work in pattern over 38 blocks, *ch 2, 2 dc tog*, repeat from * to * 8 more times for a total of 9 decreases, ch 2, 1 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch of previous row, ch 5, turn. (57 blocks)

Row 2 - 1 dc in next dc, work even in pattern across 10 more blocks (one block has been decreased), ch 3 and turn. (11 blocks)
Keeping armhole edge even, continue to decrease 1 block every other row until 8 blocks remain.
Work even in pattern to Row 15, fasten off.

OTHER FRONT
Attach yarn to other side at the 3rd ch. Start with Row 1 of Front and work to correspond.

BACK
Skip two blocks after the Front. Attach yarn to last dc of 2nd block. Ch 5, dc in next dc. Work even in pattern over 28 blocks, ch 5, turn. (29 blocks)

Work 15 rows.

FINISHING:
Sew shoulder seams.

Trim: With right side facing, attach yarn on lower edge corner and work a border of 1sc, ch 2, 1 dc in first block, *in next block, 1 sc, ch 2, 1dc, repeat from * across bottom of vest, skipping every third block. Continue working border around fronts and back of neck.
