Sue's Knitted Socks for Men

MATERIALS
Yarn: Worsted weight yarn.
Needles: 4 double pointed 4.00 mm needles.
Size: Men's shoe size 9 (10 to 11 inch foot)
Gauge - 5 Knit sts = 1 inch
7 Knit rows = 1 inch

Abbreviations used:
st - stitch
K - knit
P - purl
K2tog - knit 2 together
P2tog - purl 2 together

Cast 14 sts loosely on each of the 3 needles (total 42 sts) Or, cast 42 sts loosely on one needle, then divide to 14 on three needles.
I used two colors, but you can do it all in one color. Where I used two colors I will show where to make the color changes.

RNDS 1 to 4 - With Main Color, K1, P1 to end of Rnd.
Rnds 5 and 6 - With 2nd Color, K1, P1 to end of Rnd.
Rnds 7 to 8 - With Main Color, K1, P1 to end of Rnd.
Rnds 9 to 10 - With 2nd Color, K1, P1 to end of Rnd.
Rnds 11 to 60 - K1, P1 to end of Rnd.

It's easier to use stitch markers on every 10th Rnd so you don't have to count Rnds over and over. I like to use a different color of yarn (about 4 or 5 inches long) as a stitch marker and knit it with the main color for a couple stitches.
Heel (Change to 2nd color here)
Put 22 sts on first needle and 10 sts on the other two needles.

Row 1 - K to end of row, turn. (22 sts)
Row 2 - P to end or row, turn. (22 sts)
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 to Row 18. (22 sts)
Row 19 - K5, K2tog, K8, K2tog, K5 (20 sts)
Row 20 - P4, P2tog, P8, P2tog, P4 (18 sts)
Row 21 - K3, K2tog, K8, K2tog, K3 (16 sts)
Row 22- P2, P2tog, P8, P2tog, P2 (14 sts)

On the next needle after the heel that had 10 sts unworked, pick up 16 more stitches along the edge of the heel row for a total of 26 sts. (See photo below)

With your 4th needle pick up 16 more stitches along heel edge after the 10 unworked sts on the other needle. (See photo below)

With the Main Color where you left off before starting the heel, knit the 16 sts you just picked up onto the 4th needle.

Continue with Main Color as follows for foot of sock:

Rnd 1 - K all around. (66 sts)
Rnd 2 - K14 on first needle, then on the next needle K14, K2tog, K10. Next needle K10, K2tog, K14 (64 sts)
I will put slashes / to indicate where instructions start for each needle.
Rnd 3 - K14 / K13, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K13 (62 sts)
Rnd 4 - K14 / K12, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K12 (60 sts)
Rnd 5 - K14 / K11, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K11 (58 sts)
Rnd 6 - K14 / K10, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K10 (56 sts)
Rnd 7 - K14 / K9, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K10 (54 sts)
Rnd 8 - K14 / K8, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K8 (52 sts)
Rnd 9 - K14 / K7, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K7 (50 sts)
Rnd 10 - K14 / K6, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K6 (48 sts)
Rnd 11 - K14 / K5, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K5 (46 sts)
Rnd 12 - K14 / K4, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K4 (44 sts)
Rnd 13 - K14 / K3, K2tog, K10 / K10, K2tog, K3 (42 sts)
Rnd 14 to 50 - K (42 sts)

Change to 2nd Color here. I didn't think it was necessary to put the slashes for each needle here. Towards the end of the Rnds, you will have to move a st from one needle onto another needle so you can knit two together.
Rnd 51 - K16, K2tog, K20, K2 tog, K2 (40 sts)
Rnd 52 - K15, K2tog, K19, K2tog, K2 (38 sts)
Rnd 53 - K14, K2tog, K18, K2tog, K2 (36 sts)
Rnd 54 - K14, K2tog, K16, K2tog, K2 (34 sts)
Rnd 55 - K14, K2tog, K14, K2tog, K2 (32 sts)
Rnd 56 - K14, K2tog, K14, K2tog (30 sts)
Rnd 57 - K13, K2tog, K13, K2tog (28 sts)
Rnd 58 - K12, K2tog, K12, K2tog (26 sts)
Rnd 59 - K11, K2tog, K11, K2tog (24 sts)
Rnd 60 - K10, K2tog, K10, K2tog (22 sts)
Rnd 61 - K9, K2tog, K9, K2tog (20 sts)
Rnd 62 - K2tog to end of Rnd. (10 sts)

Put yarn on a darning needle and sew through each of the remaining sts on the needles. Pull tight to close up toe end and sew to fasten.
